Last week, Q kicked off its first annual Week of Service. To celebrate, Operators in all four of Q’s offices — New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago — participated in volunteer activities aimed at giving back to the communities where we live and work.

The week began with a national clothing drive, supporting Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that helps women launch careers by connecting them with job-related resources, including interview prep, professional attire, and other resources.

Each Q office set up a collection box so Operators could donate unworn or gently used professional attire and accessories at work. The drive was a big success — by the end of the week, the donation box (which turned into more of a donation room) in Q’s HQ was overflowing.

The main event of the week was Q’s Day of Service on Friday, July 29. Operators spent the day out-of-the-office, working on service projects in their local communities. Q partnered with national organizations including City Year and Meals on Wheels to coordinate the day’s events.

“Q’s first Day of Service was such a blast,” said Q’s Director of Talent Amy Wolf Forrester.

“One of the best parts was seeing updates on Slack and social media from our colleagues in each Q city, all of whom were working on service projects that will have long-lasting impact in their communities,” she said.

In New York, more than 80 Operators spent the day in Harlem at the Opportunity Charter School working on a variety of beautification and construction projects, alongside nonprofit partner City Year.

Opportunity Charter School caters to NYC youth who struggle in traditional learning environments, including students with disabilities and special needs. The school equips them with the tools they needto excel academically, emotionally and socially, in all aspects of life.

A little over 10 years old, the school was created to meet the growing educational needs of the Harlem community, where access to a quality education for students with learning disabilities and socioeconomic barriers traditionally have been limited.

The charter school’s principal, who joined Q onsite for the entire day, was thrilled to have such a large group of enthusiastic volunteers spend the day working in the space.

The principal loves to celebrate school spirit, so many of the projects — from painting the hallways the school colors of scarlet and gray to creating murals with inspirational quotes from community leaders— were designed to make students feel proud and excited about their school.

Throughout the day, Operators built colorful school furniture and spruced up the school hallways with artwork and new paint coats to create a positive and welcoming environment, paving the way for a fresh start to the fall semester.

Joe Tucker of Q’s Supplies Operations team spent the day building and painting a bookcase for one of the school’s classrooms. To him, the Day of Service was a great opportunity to bond with colleagues while working together to make an impact

"It definitely feels like Day of Service brought the company closer together," he said. "It feels great to work at a company where we all share a common value of giving back."

In Chicago, volunteers supported The Herzl School of Excellence by painting paneling to promote a positive school climate and academic excellence.

In San Francisco, Managed by Q partnered with Meals on Wheels and Splunk to deliver disaster preparedness kits to at-risk seniors and residents in the city’s SOMA and Tenderloin neighborhoods.

Q volunteers walked door-to-door delivering the kits to ensure that San Francisco’s most vulnerable residents are prepared in the event of a major earthquake or other natural disaster.

“Teaming with Meals on Wheels to distribute emergency packets for Q’s Day of Service was not only fun and rewarding but a reminder that I work for a company that cares about the community and giving back,” said Q Maintenance Operations Manager, Valerie Von Bank.

Finally, in Los Angeles, Managed by Q and City Year constructed benches and painted murals of local community leaders at The Siemon Family Youth & Community Center.

The goal was to create a more vibrant, welcoming environment to serve the diverse needs of its community members. The Center is designed to assist, support and inspire all members of the community, from their longest-residing grandparents to the most-recent newborns.

Operators in all four cities agreed that Q’s first annual week of service was greatly rewarding, and look forward to continuing the tradition.

“The atmosphere at our first annual Q Day of Service was contagious. Everyone was so genuinely excited to be there and to be giving back to the community in which many of our Operators come from. It set a spark for further service opportunities through Q and provided a deeper understanding of what it really means to serve the world around us,” said the Q Day of Service Organizer and Executive Assistant Ali Czarnecki.

Similar to our Everybody Cleans mantra, the idea that Everybody Serves conveys our belief that we only succeed when we work together as a team.
